HAVE A JOYOUS AND SAFE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY

Christmas can be a great time of year where family members come together to share love, presents, and memories of the year almost completed. Over time, Christmas treeshave become a symbol for the holidays, and natural trees are still the option for a large percentage of families. Natural trees bring with them that wonderful smell and beauty that everyone can appreciate, but they also can create a serious fire hazard in the home.

There are simple steps people can take to enjoy a natural Christmas tree while minimizing the risk of serious injury.

1. Always purchase the freshest tree possible. Trees with dried-out needles are extremely combustible. Shake any dried needles off of the tree before taking it inside the home.

2. Check the lighting strings carefully to make sure they are in good shape with no frays. Only purchase lights that are certified as being safe such as those with the UL label and always turn the lights off before leaving the home or going to bed.

3. Position your tree in the room very carefully. Keep it away from heating vents, radiators, fireplaces, or exits. Also, do not use long extension cords for the lights, but place it near an electrical outlet.

4. Keep a fire extinguisher close by in case a fire does occur.

5. One of the MOST important things you need to do is to use a QUALITY tree stand that will provide stability and firm support. If your tree stand is not of good quality, consider purchasing a new tree stand. This is one simple thing you can do to vastly reduce the chances of a tree falling and a fire starting.

6. Make a cut between one .5 inch and 1 inch at the bottom of the tree so it can absorb water and remain fresh longer. The tree stand needs to hold sufficient water to allow the tree to remain moist. If you are using a tree stand that does not have a decent reservoir for water, considerpurchasing a new tree stand. Also, make sure to check the water level periodically because the tree will absorb water and water will evaporate in dry conditions.

7. Keep an eye on small children and pets. Both are attracted to new things in a room and to the bright lights and decorations.

These are some simple steps you can take to enjoy the beauty and warmth of a natural Christmas tree while remaining safe and sound.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND WARM WISHES FOR THE NEW YEAR!
